Gas Fireplaces Need Service Too
A gas fireplace has no ash to shovel, but it still has a burner, a pilot, sensors, a gas valve, and a vent, and all of them get dirty or wear out. Regular service keeps it lighting reliably and burning cleanly, and it catches small faults before the fireplace stops working on a cold night.
Signs Your Gas Fireplace Needs Service
- The pilot won't light or won't stay lit
- The fireplace won't turn on from the switch or remote
- It shuts off by itself after a few minutes
- White film or black soot on the glass
- Weak, uneven, or unusually colored flames
- A delay or a bang when the burner lights
- It has been a year or more since it was serviced
Common Problems and What Causes Them
Often a dirty or worn thermocouple or thermopile, the sensors that tell the gas valve the pilot is burning.
Commonly a dead remote or receiver battery, a faulty wall switch, or a weak signal from the thermopile.
Dirty sensors or a venting problem can trip the safety system.
Logs out of position, dirty burner ports, or the wrong air mix.
Dirty burner ports or a weak pilot flame let gas collect before it lights.

Common Questions
- How often should a gas fireplace be serviced?
- Once a year keeps the burner, pilot, and venting working safely.
- What should I do if I smell gas?
- Leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Don't use the fireplace, switches, or anything that could spark.
- Can I clean the glass myself?
- Yes, with a cleaner made for gas fireplace glass and only when the glass is cold. Household glass cleaner can damage it.
- Do you service gas inserts as well as fireplaces?
- Yes. We service gas fireplaces and gas inserts.
- Can you get parts for my model?
- It depends on the make and age of the unit. Your technician will tell you what is available after the diagnosis.
